Annual Gospel Gala Ignites
Hallelujahs at the Kravis Center
(West Palm Beach, FL – May 14, 2010) On April 23, hand-clapping and foot-tapping fans celebrated the 18th annual Gospel Gala at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
A Kravis Center Community Outreach Event hosted by the Center’s Community Relations Committee, the annual concert has featured numerous gospel legends such as Shirley Caesar, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams and Cece Winans.
This year’s Gospel Gala featured the legendary Boys’ Choir of Tallahassee under the direction of Earle Lee, Jr. A community based outreach program for males, ages 8 to 18, who are enrolled in schools throughout the Tallahassee area, the mission of the Boys’ Choir is to foster academic excellence, build character and self esteem, develop interpersonal skills, and help young men realize their fullest potential while acquiring life skills. The crowd-pleasing Choir has travelled all around the State of Florida, as well as to the Kennedy Center in Washington, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Gospel Gala 2010 also featured several outstanding local choirs: the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches with Choir Director Shawn Berry, and Dimensional Harmony, the Boynton Beach High School Chorus with Choir Director Sterling Frederick. Community Relations Committee member Allyson Dupree Smith emceed the evening.
Palm Beach County’s largest community based children’s choir, the Young Singers has approximately 230 singers, in grades 3 through 12, representing both 63 Palm Beach County schools and home school students. Based at the Kravis Center, they have performed locally, nationally, and internationally.
Dimensional Harmony is comprised of 50 Boynton Beach High School Students and has earned Superior ratings at their District, State, and National Competitions, and performed at the 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 Music Festivals at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Last year they competed in the New York City Heritage Festival, winning first place gold, and performed at the Apollo Theater.
Prior to the performance, the Boys Choir of Tallahassee met with members of the Kravis Center’s Community Relations Committee. The committee members are John E. Jenkins, Chairman, Cheryl Jones-Connor, Betty Farr, Alyce Foster, Lee A. Hooks, John H. Howard, Eunice Locke, Board Chairman William A. Meyer, Ex-officio, Zenetta Miller, Felicia Rodriguez, Allyson Dupree Smith and Constance Ward.
